Debunking Website Design Myths
When you work for a web design agency, you’re frequently asked by friends and family for website building tips, and I understand why - site design is a complicated process that people are either intimidated by or jump into and quickly end up over their heads. There is also an abundance of information floating around, and while some of it is helpful, it’s good to remember that there’s no entrance exam before posting something online. So, as a seasoned web design agency, we’ve compiled the following list of the top website myths we would like to debunk for good!
1. Once my website is live, it’s finished.
Probably our top tip for building a website is don’t forget it once you’ve pushed it live. I know it takes a lot of work to get your website ready for the world, and you deserve a break, but make it a short one. Keep your content current, add in elements that you didn’t have time for before your launch, and be sure to quickly resolve any problems that arise. Don’t let all of your hard work go to waste by neglecting your new website!
2. My brand new website will immediately get traction.
Unfortunately, being the new kid on the block does not guarantee success. Once your site is completed, it’s important to have a well-rounded marketing strategy, including SEO, in place to let people know that it’s there!
3. If it looks good on my computer, then it’ll look good everywhere.
According to Smart Insights, the majority of internet searches currently occur on mobile devices, not desktops or tablets. In our ever-connected world, it should be a top priority of any web design agency you’re working with to ensure that your site is responsive (aka mobile-friendly). When we feel it’s right for a client, we will even focus on mobile-first and then make sure the desktop/tablet views are user-friendly second.
4. If something falls below the fold, my audience won’t see it.
Don’t worry about trying to fit all of your important information at the top of your site! These days, scrolling is second nature, and as long as the content on your site always looks like there’s something more to it even the least tech-savvy viewer will feel prompted to scroll.
5. As long as someone knows how to code, my website will be fine.
Not all developers are good developers and hiring a bad one can be an expensive mistake. Hiring a qualified developer with a proven portfolio is a must, and we highly recommend hiring one recommended by a trusted creative — that way you can attest to how much the end website looked like the comps they were given.
